I have always been fascinated with the subjective experience art has the capability of producing. Projective Investigations produces cognition and personality variables such as motivations, response tendencies, cognitive operations, affectivity, and personal/interpersonal perceptions designed to allow the viewer to respond to ambiguous stimuli, presumably revealing hidden emotions and internal conflicts projected by the participant into the imagery.

The processes is reliant upon the illusion of space via formal design principles such as depth, form, color, movement, and contrast to produce a response from the viewer. Form, being the most common determinant, is directly related to intellectual processes once an image or object is recognizable; color responses often provide direct insight into emotional life. Shading and movement are considered more ambiguous, both in definition and interpretation although more than one determinant can contribute to the formation of the subject's percept.  The viewers experience is their own, as the imagery provokes active observation that is unique from viewer to viewer.
